Rescue Me Task 4

  Investigating an Actual Volcano

Lesson Objective:

  • To produce a case study on a volcano

Skill's target:

  • To be INDEPENDENT ENQUIRERS - to plan and carry out research, appreciating the consequences of decisions.

Starter:

In this lesson you are going to be Independent Enquirers. What does that mean?

Investigation:

In this lesson you will be producing a case study on a volcano. Your teacher will tell you which volcano you are to research. The options are:

Mount St Helens Mount Pinatubo
Mount Vesuvius Monserrat
Mount Etna

Use this worksheet to help you.

Your work should include:

  • a map showing the location of the volcano within the country.
  • an annotated map of the region locating the features of the latest eruption.
  • annotated photographs of the eruption, showing the effects.
  • information about the sequence of events, including the physical and human causes and the effects of the disaster (for example the warning system, the evacuation programme, the loss of possessions).

You can present your information in any way you choose - for example as a wall display, in a word document or as a ppt.

At the end of the lesson you will present your work and carry out some PEER ASSESSMENT of each other's work.

Plenary:

Compare the differences between the effects of each eruption. Are there any factors that make the effects better or worse?
