Starter:

Your teacher will give you a paper exercise to do: can you place the labels in the right place on the picture of an earthquake?

 
     
 

Tasks:

1. Watch this ppt about how earthquakes happen.

 

2. Your teacher may give you some information from a text book about how earthquakes work.

3. Use the ppt and any other information the teacher gives you to

  • explain why earthquakes occur
  • explain what the key terms focus and epicentre mean
  • explain how we measure earthquakes (use the terms 'Richter scale' and 'Seismograph' in your work)

4. You now need to complete the worksheet 'What is an Earthquake?' to see if you have learnt the key terms of the lesson.

5. Your teacher may now show you a video about recent earthquakes in Kobe, San Francisco and India. Make notes on the key facts about each earthquake using this help sheet, then write up your notes making sure you answer this question:
