Starter:

Use this ppt to discuss and describe the events of the Boxing Day Tsunami.

 
     
 

1. Use paper or ppt to make a fact file about what you have found out.

2. Locate the area in an atlas, or use an online map, and add this to your fact file.

3. You are now going to write an essay called 'Life after the Tsunami hit', about the effects of the Tsunami. Use everything you have learnt so far and the writing frame below to help you. (click this link for a paper copy)

WRITING FRAME FOR ESSAY

LIFE AFTER THE TSUNAMI HIT

 

You and your family have lived in Banda Aceh on the island of Sumatra for many generations. Your father and uncles are fisherman who would go out to sea every day to catch fish to sell in the local market. You have a large family and everyone lives close to each other. That was until 7 days ago when your world suddenly changed and you knew your life would never be the same again.

 

YOUR TASK (empathy writing)

  • Write a story about what life in Banda Aceh has been like in the days after the Tsunami for those, like yourself who survived the wave.
  • Think of a suitable title for your essay
  • Explain what you were doing at the time the wave struck and what happened to members of your family, your house, neighbours, etc
  • Include descriptions of the events as the wave approached and hit the coast and of the damage to the area.
  • Describe the problems that you have experienced since (e.g. lack of food, water, medical needs, shock etc)
  • Find pictures of Banda Aceh to show what it was like both BEFORE and AFTER the wave hit.

 

EXTRA TASKS

You could also find :

  • Map to show the areas affected by the tsunami
  • Data about how many people died—You could plot these as a graph using excel
  • Diagrams to show causes of tsumanis

I have included my ideas on what the life for my family might be in the future, by taking into account their points of view as well.
