During the Middle Ages it was not only the king who had huge power over the people – so did the Catholic Church. The Catholic Church was controlled by the Pope in Rome. Religion was a very important part of people’s lives but it also led to many disputes between the King and the church over who was the most important.

 
 

The dispute between Henry II and Thomas Becket, the Archbishop of Canterbury led to Thomas being murdered.
