Information:
| |
The first King to give up some of his power was John. King John ruled over England from 1199-1216. He is famous as a ridiculous character from Disney’s film 'Robin Hood'. |
| |
In these stories he is shown as a mean and foolish man who wants to have loads of money. Some historians agree with this view of John. Some disagree and say that John was just unlucky. In the next two lessons you are going to look at the problems John faced; how the barons behaved towards John and how the Magna Carta led to the first Parliament. You are also going to decide on the reasons why John lost some of his power – poor leadership or bad luck? |
| |
| |
After John’s time as King the power of the monarch changed and they had to work with Parliament in deciding important matters such as taxes. The power of the King was never the same again.
