How Do We Map Crime?
 
     
 
Lesson Objectives:
  • To give reasons for the locations of crime in towns.
  • To evaluate where crimes happen on a regional scale.
 
     
 
Starter: Crime in Maidstone
Take a look at the photo of Maidstone below. (you can click on the image for a ppt version of the photo) You need to decide where you think crime is likely to happen and why, using your knowledge of the town and a map.
 
 
     
 
1. Now open the document 'Mapping Crime' and answer questions 1-5. Make sure you give reasons for your answers. You may want to discuss these in class first.
2. You now need to use the 3rd and 4th pages of the above worksheet (titled 'Crime in Kent'). Use the information in the chart to draw a graph showing the amount of crime for the 6 towns in Kent. You can use Excel for this. Then write about Crime in Kent, following the instructions in the table below:
 
 

Use the graphs, the table and the map to write about crime in Kent. You should include

  • Add some labels onto the map to show what the levels of crime are like in different areas of Kent
  • What is meant by the term crimes per 1000 population
  • Are levels of crime higher or lower than the National average
  • Which areas of Kent have higher/ lower levels of crime than the average for Kent
  • Which areas have the worst levels of crime? Why do you think this is so?
  • Which areas have the lowest levels of crime? Why do you think this is so?
  • Add some labels onto the map to show what the levels of crime are like in different areas of Kent.
