What are the recent trends in crime and how can we beat it?

Lesson Objectives:

To understand how crime rates ahve changed in recent years.
To evaluate different viewpoints about how to beat crime.

Starter: Try this true or false quiz on crime.

1. Now open up the worksheet 'Trends in crime statistics' and use the graphs to answer the analysis questions.

2. You are now going to do some groupwork.

a) Your teacher will divide you into 8 groups. Each group will be given one of the topics from this sheet 'The way forward'.

Members of Parliament in London
Teachers
Parents, guardians and carers
The police and teams of Community Support Officers
Television programme producers
Young people

b) Brainstorm ideas that your group could do to help the community beat crime. Remember that you have to represent the ideas of the group you have been given - these ideas might not be things you would agree with!!

c) You are now going to hold a town meeting called 'Beating Crime'. Each group has to present their ideas and come up with a list of things the community will do to stop crime.
