Citizenship: Young People and Crime

Lesson Objectives:
  • To understand how Crime effects people and communities
  • To develop Citizenship skills

Citizenship Skills:

For your final activities in this unit on Crime and how it affects people and communities you will be developing your Citizenship skills. These include

  • knowledge and understanding about the topic (this means what you know and how well you understand things)
  • being able to enquire and communicate about the issues (this means finding out and sharing your findings)
  • participating responsibly as citizens (this means how you make life better by getting involved and doing things)

Your work will be assessed on these skills. Click on the Assessment link above to find out how you will be assessed.

Work through the tasks, but keep your end assessment in mind. Use all the links to help you find out about this topic, particularly the Crime Weblinks in the Resources page above.

The first thing we will be asking ourselves is:

What sorts of crime do young people get involved in?
How does crime affect young people?

Think about and discuss how young people are affected by crime, both as victims and as offenders.

Next, try some of these activities to improve your knowledge and understanding on this topic:

1. Read Safer Surfing from Resources folder. What did the policeman mean by ‘Stranger Danger with Technology’?

2. Use the link below to try the CBBC online quiz on Internet Safety CBBC news quiz .

3. Do the Chatrooms Case Study ‘Meeting Hipchick’.

4. Go to the stoptextbully site. Do the quiz on text bullying, plus answers – and lots of other advice and info.

5. Make a poster to put up in your school to tell people what counts as text or cyber bullying – many people probably don’t think of it as bullying! Also see http://www.bullying.co.uk/pupils/internet_safety.php to help you with this.

6. Look at this website about the dangers of carrying knives http://www.damilolataylortrust.org/welcome.htm     (Parts of the website are not yet complete, but find out about Pledge Walls. Do you think this is a good idea? Could you start one?)

7. Do the worksheet "What can statistics tell us about crime and young people?"

8. Go to Worksheet "Types of crimes involving young people" and complete the chart, discussing your ideas with other pupils in your group.
