CRIME Task 8

Citizenship: Getting Involved in Crime - The Consequences

Lesson Objectives:
  • To understand the consequences of crime.
  • To develop Citizenship skills

We are going to looking at the following questions:

What happens to young people who get involved in crime?

How can you tell young people what they need to know about this?

Try some of these activities to find out about this topic:

The first thing to do is find out about the Criminal Justice System (CJS) and what happens to young people when they get involved with it.

Magistrates in a Youth Court

Find out what happens to young people when they

  • get arrested
  • go to court
  • go to prison
  • have a criminal record

You can use the following websites to help:

www.cjsonline.gov.uk has information about the Criminal Justice System in England and Wales, how it works, and who's involved.

http://www.yjb.gov.uk/en-gb/ the website for the Youth Justice Board

www.rizer.co.uk a website you can explore - has lots of information on crime, the law and how both affect young people - it was designed by young people for young people.

The second thing to do is get a copy of the document Vandalism and Young People and then do the quiz.

The third thing to do is is think about how could you tell other young people what you have found out?
Some suggested activities:

1. Make a flow-chart showing how the Criminal Justice System (CJS) works.

2. Write a diary/week-by-week account of what it feels like to get arrested and taken to court if you are a young person. Remember to include details which are factually correct – don’t just make it up!  (Some of you will remember PC Richardson’s presentation last year about what happened to a young person who was charged with criminal damage for graffiti. This might help you.)

Remember to save your work....
