Science
Objectives
  • To explain why we need bacteria in the body
  • To know whether common diseases are caused by a virus, bacteria or fungi.
End Product
  • Choose a common infectious illness and research it to make a poster. This should explain to other pupils in KS3 and KS4 how the chosen illness is spread, what the symptoms are and what steps can be taken to help prevent the illness from spreading around the school

Task 6
  • Collect a sheet of A3 paper and then write down the names of any diseases you have had. What were they caused by? Were the diseases infectious or not?
  • Research and explain why it is healthy to have a natural population of microbes on and inside the body
  • See your teacher about doing an experiment to demonstrate the presence of micro-organisms in the air. Expose sterile agar plates to the air around the lab. Seal and incubate. Examine next lesson for signs of bacterial colonies.
  • Watch a clip from ‘The Simpsons’ ‘Marge in Chains’ showing microbes getting in to various characters and the immune system attacking them, followed by a discussion with your partner about how microbes travel. Make some key notes about what you learnt from this clip.
  • Ask your teacher for a set of traffic light cards – Your teacher will read out a list of questions and you have to hold up a card for your response.

Green means yes, Red means no and yellow means not sure.
