Science
Objectives
  • To state the parts of the breathing system

  • To describe the structure of the breathing system and explain how this allows breathing to take place.

  • Explain how alveoli are adapted for efficient gaseous exchange.

End Product
  • Fully written up investigation into vital capacity of members of your class. Backed up with a scientific conclusion of why peers with asthma will struggle with this experiment and that’s why they should not take part.
Breathing and gaseous exchange - Task 10
  • Open a new document and title it “Breathing” you will use this for the next couple of lessons.
  • Using the anagrams of part of the breathing system get pupils to rearrange.
  • You could test yourself or a friend by Respiratory system_labelling.ppt
  • Now put these labels onto the diagram of the breathing system your teacher will give you. You might even want to draw it yourself.
  • Your teacher will show you a model of a chest. See if you can tell what each part is representing. Answer the question in the yellow box on p72 of biology for you.
  • Look at page 70 & 73 of the text book. Describe how special cells help you to breathe easier. What does mucus have to do with it?
  • Take a huge breathe in, now breathe it all back out. The amount of air you can breathe out is called your Vital Capacity.
  • Health warning: Do not attempt the following experiment if you suffer from asthma or other respiratory diseases.
  • Ask your teacher about measuring your vital capacity.
  • Take results from 9 other people in your class and put them in a results table. Put your results into a graph and compare your VC with your peers. Extension: What factors effects a person’s vital capacity?
  • Look at this video on the breathing system of someone with asthma:
  • http://www.kidshealth.org/kid/closet/movies/asthma_movie.html Be warned narrator is very dull but movie is good.
  • Use OHP of breathing system and label, hopefully pupils will see improvements to previous go.
  • Research emphysema, what happens to sufferer’s alveoli why does this make them short of breathe? Emphysema:http://www.mamashealth.com/emphy.asp
