- Proteins and Lipids - Task 2
-
Fats are more energy rich than carbohydrates and are stored in the body as an energy reserve. If people eat too much energy containing food, the surplus is stored as fat. This makes people overweight, making movement difficult and may increase stress on the heart.
- Find your word document from last lesson titled “Nutrition”. Continue today’s work here.
- When you cook foods at home, some leave a large amount of fat behind in the tray e.g. when you grill sausages. Write a list of the foods which contain a high amount of fat and suggest a healthier alternative.
- Click on the link and select the food group you need information on, Food groups
- There are 3 experiments that can be carried out for lipids Click here for a useful worksheet on this practical Key Stage 4+ Resources\Food tests and Model gut.doc – the emulsion test which tests for fat in burgers, and a simple demo where you wipe certain foods across some greaseproof paper to see how much fat is left. Ask your teacher about each of these and then write up one of them fully (this is a good skill to have in science)
Proteins are used by YOUR body for growth and repair. There is a practical you can carry out to test for protein called the Biuret test Click here for a useful worksheet on this practical Key Stage 4+ Resources\Food tests and Model gut.doc. Ask your teacher about this.
- See if you can find out what proteins are made up of. What foods can you get your protein from? What would be the problem if you had too little protein in your diet when you were younger? Put all your ideas in your open word document.
- Find out what your results mean by clicking here What do your food tests mean?
