- Homeostasis Task 20
-
- Compare the arctic fox with a desert fox. Suggest how the ears may play a significant part in the thermoregulation of both these animals. In what other ways do these two foxes differ?
- Have a look at the animation of heat on the skin at www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/biology/humansasorganisms/6homeostasisrev2.shtml
- You can then look at the animation of maintaining levels of water and salts at: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/biology/humansasorganisms/6homeostasisrev3.shtml
- Finally, have a look at the animation of glucoregulation at: www.bbc.co.uk/schools/gcsebitesize/biology/humansasorganisms/6homeostasisrev4.shtml
- Open a new word document and call it ‘Homeostasis’. Use the information you have gained so far and conduct some further research to write about all the organs involved in homeostasis and the different levels which need to be controlled.
- Look at the following statements: ‘hot day’, ‘running a marathon’ and ‘lazy day at home’. Suggest how their fluid intake and urine output would vary under these different circumstances and why.
The next bits need to be done if you are doing the higher tier.
Blood sugar concentration
Insulin causes increase in rate of uptake of glucose by cells and an increase of respiration.Osmoregulation
Water content of blood controlled by hypothalamus and pit.gland
How these two organs work together and the role of ADHTemperature regulation
