Science
Objectives
  • To know what a food chain is
  • To describe how energy and poisons are transferred along a food chain
End Product
  • Design a food web with trophic level labels
Task 1
  • Use the following website to find out the difference between a food chain and a food web.
    www.bbc.co.uk

  • In a word document titled “energy transfer in a food chain” explain how energy is transferred along these links, does the energy decrease or increase, why does this happen.

  • Use pictures from the internet to create your own food web and describe the energy transfer. This can be done either on computer or using scissors and glue.

  • Make sure you understand the different trophic levels as well.

  • Ask your teacher for a selection of animal cards. Your challenge is to arrange these into as many food chains and webs as you can. 0-5 chains is ok, 6-10 is good but 11-15 is excellent!

  • Now that you understand how food chains work and energy is transferred, you need to research how toxins are transferred through a food chain. You could use the example of DDT – what does it stand for and why was it a problem? Add this to the end of your word document with a title “toxins through food chains”.
