Plugs

Objectives:

  • To be able to explain the job of the parts of a plug

Timing: 1-2 lessons

Now you need to find out to wire a plug. The following sites will help you: http://www.thediyworld.co.uk/wiring_plug.html,

http://www.edfenergy.com/powerup/keystage3/in/index.html and http://www.rospa.co.uk/ni/electricity/plugsfuses/plug_wiring.htm. Make sure you know which wire goes where, where the fuse goes and what the wires and fuse do. There's a wiring game on: http://www.presencemultimedia.co.uk/bitsnbobs/examples/5.

Why might a device not need an earth wire?

Your teacher will probably get you to practise wiring a plug safely.

The next job is to find out how the fuse works. Your teacher can demo this using a piece of wire and a power pack. You also need to look at circuit breakers but you don't need to know details of how they work. Use http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/circuit-breaker.htm and http://lgfl.skoool.co.uk/keystage3.aspx?id=93.

You could carry out an investigation into the relationship between the thickness of a wire and the current it carries.

You could do the following worksheets:

"Using electricity safely"

"Keeping safe - circuit breakers"

"Circuit-breakers - 1"

"Circuit-breakers - 2"

"Wiring a plug"
