Sunglasses

Objectives:

  • To be able to explain how polarising filters work

Timing: 1 lessons

Sunglasses can protect your eyes from the harmful effects of the Sun. Go to: http://www.polaroideyewear.com/ and http://science.howstuffworks.com/sunglass2.htm to read about how Polaroid sunglasses work. Make sure you understand how polarizing filters work.

Your teacher will probably give you some polarizing filters to play with. What happens when you rotate one of them. Try putting layers of sellotape onto a microscope slide and view it between the filters - you should get some nice effects. Why do they happen? You can see a picture at: http://www.think-differently.co.uk/downloads/house_notes2.doc. You can also put a plastic object such as a CD case or protractor between the filters to show the stress patterns.
