Unit 3 - UK Travel and Tourism Destinations

This assignment will be in 4 Parts with a deadline given for each.

The following guidelines should be used when completing your assignment:

  • You must refer to the criteria banner and the content of the unit throughout the assignment.
  • You should make sure you do detailed research and have a good understanding of the business you are describing.
  • Before handing in you must:
    • Check that you have completed all tasks
    • Label work appropriately
    • Present tasks in the correct order
    • That your name appears clearly in the header or footer of each page

Part 1 – Destinations and Gateways (P1)

There is a new travel agent opening in Maidstone town centre, HEW Travel, where you have just got a trainee travel consultants job. They specialise in providing travel information and booking holidays for Domestic, Europe and Worldwide markets. They have asked you to produce some material for them as part of your training looking at the UK market.

Task 1 (P1)

Using the UK maps provided, locate the following:

  • Capital Cities
  • At least 6 destinations (ensuring you cover at least one from the following: seaside resorts, cultural or historical towns or cities, countryside or coastal areas, spa towns and Islands)
  • At least 6 airports (give their 3 letter codes)
  • At least 6 sea ports (one must be from UK to Ireland and UK to Europe)

Part 2 – Appeal of Destinations (P2, M1, D1)

To further your knowledge of the UK, HEW Travel have asked you to produce some information sheets about the appeal of different destinations. They have given you a list of the things you need to cover and have asked you to think about the many different types of visitor your destinations attract.

Task 1 (P2)

You need to create an information fact sheet for three UK tourist destinations. The destinations you choose, should consist of one from each of the following sections:

  • One Town or City
  • One Seaside Resort
  • One Countryside Area

For each of your destinations you must cover the following details:

Visitor Attractions, Topography (landscape), Facilities, Arts and Entertainment, Sightseeing, Transport Links and Types of Visitors

You MUST remember to think about the different types of visitor and the needs they may have for each destination.

Hints and Tips!

The layout of your fact sheet should be appropriate for your audience. The audience stated is anyone likely to be visiting the travel agency and be interested in your chosen location. Avoid WordArt, it's dated! Use your choice of programmes, but ensure you use as many of the facilities as you can, i.e. text boxes to layout the information in an attractive manner. Use the headings provided, i.e. Visitor Attractions, Topography etc. Include the HEW Travel logo. Be descriptive

Task 2 (M1)

Using the three destinations you have produced information sheets for ANALYSE the appeal of each destination for different visitor types:

  • Families
  • Young People
  • Retired People
  • Inbound Tourists
  • People with Special Needs

Task 3 (D1)

Select one of the destinations used for you information sheets. Make recommendations explaining how your destination could increase its appeal to different types of visitor. You must justify your ideas with an explanation of how the idea will attract the visitor type.

Part 3 – Travel Planning (P3, M2 Part)

HEW Travel needs to test your travel arranging ability, and have asked you to plan 4 different journeys using rail, coach, air and car to each of 3 different destinations. You have been asked to reference ALL resources used to get you to your destinations.

Part 4 – UK Holiday Planning (P4, M2, M3, D2)

The final part of your training is to plan holidays within the UK for three different types of visitor. HEW Travel has given you three different visitor scenarios for you to prepare holidays for. You must work out the cost of the holidays (accommodation, travel and activities) and reference all the resources you use.

Scenario 1

Family - Mother, Father and 2 Children (both under 7)

The family are on a budget and are looking to spend one week away from their home in Maidstone within the UK. Because they have 2 small children they need to be entertained but with child care facilities so the parents can have some time together alone. The family are looking to go during the Easter Holidays as one child is at school.

Scenario 2

Retired Couple

The couple are looking for a short city break, where they can relax and look at historical buildings. Money is not a problem but need accommodation where evening entertainment is put on for them. They are looking to travel in October although this date can be altered if necessary.

Scenario 3

A Group of 4 Young People

This group are students looking for a low cost holiday with lots of entertainment and action. Two of them are keen surfers but they all are very active and require lots to do. The group is looking to go in Early July to avoid the school holidays.

Task One (P4)

Using the above scenarios plan holidays for the 3 different customer types.

You must ensure you cover the content: (Customer Needs: families, young people, retired; duration – week, short break; destination - quiet, lively, chic; location – city, coast, countryside; type of accommodation; transport requirements; budget – low cost, value for money, luxury; interests – leisure, relaxation, special interests; specific needs; mode of travel – include times and prices; accommodation – prices, contact details and accommodation name; things to do – entertainment, activities, attraction, facilities)

Task Two (M2)

Reference all sources of information using the Bibliography and Webliography you used earlier.

Task Three (M3)

Explain how the arrangements for the 3 UK holidays you have organised, meet the needs of the specific target group.

Task Four (D2)

Make recommendations as to how each holiday you have organised could be adapted to meet the need of different types of customers.
