To achieve this unit you will need to:
Investigate the development of the travel and tourism industry, examine the structure of the travel and tourism industry, explore the roles and responsibilities of organisations that provide travel and tourism products and services and explore factors that affect the travel and tourism industry.
Part One: The Interview
Scenario:
You have been working in a branch of Thomas Cook for six months and have decided to apply for an internal position that has been advertised. The position is as a trainee trainer at the head office in Peterborough. You were successful in securing an interview and have been asked to make certain preparations for it.
Task One: (P1, M1)
Prepare a presentation that describes the development of the travel and tourism industry. By including an explanation of how developments have shaped the structure of the travel and tourism industry, you may achieve M1.
(You must consider: key events and milestones post 1945 to present to include: super ships, budget airlines, high speed trains, destinations, e retailing, unpackaging, call centres, industry re-structuring. Also consider future developments: super aircraft/deretailing)
Part Two: The Induction
Scenario:
You were successful in securing a position with the training team and therefore need to start your induction training.
Task One: (P2)
In a group of 4 or 5 create a wall display for the foyer of Thomas Cook head offices. The display should clearly describe the structure of the Travel and Tourism industries.
(You must consider: transport, retailers, car hire, insurance, ground handling agents, trade publications, associations and regulatory bodies, public sector tourism, Quangos, accommodation, tour operators, distributors, vertical and horizontal integration)
Part Three: Starting the Training
Task One: (P3, P4, P5)
Prepare a one day training session that will ensure that your trainees will learn about these aspects of the tourism industry. You should prepare a lesson plan, any slides that you choose to use and details of all you need to teach as well as any handouts and notes you will use. Your lesson should describe:
Task Two: (M2)
Ten of the trainees will have the opportunity to do fast track training. Your boss has said that you could do a Saturday as overtime to work with these trainees but that your training session would need to be more in depth. Therefore, when teaching about the products and services, you need to analyse them too. (see products and services above)
Task Three: (M3)
Also, as part of the fast track programme, you have been asked to analyse two factors that are having a significant effect on the travel and tourism industry today.
Task Four: (D1, D2)
As part of your preparation for the lessons and the subject in general, you have decided to evaluate the industry in general. This will enable you to field any questions you may have from the trainees. Write an evaluation of:
