This assignment has two main tasks.

The overall deadline for the whole assignment to be complete and handed in is:

First hand in: Friday 30th November 2007
Final hand in: Friday 4th January 2008

The following guidelines should be used when completing your assignment:

  • Your must refer to the criteria banner and the content of the unit throughout the assignment.
  • You should make sure you do detailed research and have a good understanding of the subject you are researching. Keep a note of the resources you use as you go along.
  • Before handing in you must:
    • Check that you have completed all tasks
    • Label work appropriately
    • Present tasks in the correct order
    • That your name appears clearly in the header or footer of each page

To achieve this unit you will need to:
Examine the range of products and services provided by visitor attractions, explore the impact of visitor attractions, examine a range of interpretation techniques used for victor interpretation and investigate the appeal of visitor attractions to different types of visitor.

Scenario
You are working as a marketing assistant for the Brighton Tourist Information Centre. The marketing manager will be writing articles on Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Brighton Pier & the Seafront and The Sea Life Centre  for a local magazine and has asked you to start the research. You will therefore need to develop questionnaires and check-lists that will help you to gather the information. You will then provide the Marketing Manager (Mr Ross Bevan) with a report (or you may chose to write three separate reports: one for each of the attractions) based on the visit to Brighton and three attractions visited. The report should include the following information:

  

 

 

 

 

 


Task 1:

P1       A description of the products and services offered by:

  • Brighton Museum & Art Galley
  • Brighton Pier & Seafront
  • The Sea Life Centre

You must consider the following:
Primary and ancillary products and services: e.g. shops, drinks and food, children’s play areas, toilets, parking, corporate hospitality, room hire, services for visitors with special needs, exhibitions, rides
Health, safety and security: access, money handling, visitor flows, layouts, routes
Customer Care and services: signage, languages, visitor satisfaction, queuing, dealing with complaints, data protection, staffing and staff training
Information: e.g. displays, animateurs, infotainment techniques (ways of providing information in an entertaining way), technological systems and developments

P2       A description of the impacts of:

  • Brighton Museum & Art Gallery
  • Brighton Pier & Seafront
  • The Sea Life Centre

on the environment and community of Brighton.

You must consider the following:
Socio-cultural: e.g. dilution of culture, broadening of culture, revival of culture, family/home issues, trinketisation, home-based entertainment
Economic: e.g. employment, investment, regeneration, seasonality
Environmental: e.g. congestion, pollution, noise, sustainability
Political: e.g. policy, EU , legislation, stability, regulations
Impact: on local environment, on local community, on wider areas, on the visitor

M1       An explanation of how:

  • Brighton Pier & Seafront
  • The Sea Life Centre

have minimised the negative impacts and maximised the positive impacts on the environment and community of Brighton.

D1       Some justified strategies to maximise positive impacts and minimise negative impacts of:

  • The Sea Life Centre

P3       A description of interpretation techniques used by:

  • Brighton Museum & Art Gallery
  • Brighton Pier & Seafront
  • The Sea Life Centre

You must consider the following:
Display: e.g. interactive, boards, virtual, auditory, animateurs, electronic, passive, active
Guiding: e.g. auditory, animateurs, tour guides, leaflets, maps
Special needs: eg.physical, visual, auditory

P4       An explanation of the appeal of:

  • Brighton Museum & Art Galley
  • Brighton Pier & Seafront
  • The Sea Life Centre

to different types of customers.

You must consider the following:
Types of attractions: e.g. heritage, culture, education, entertainment, multi-function (shops, conference facilities, special events)
Types of visitor: e.g. incoming, educational, special interest, families, different age groups, gender, special needs, corporate
Features: e.g. location, price (structure policy), transport, seasonality, access, products and services, interpretation

 

D2       Some justified suggestions on how:

could increase their appeal to different types of visitors.

 

Task 2:
The article will conclude by looking at the three attractions to make comparisons. In order to help your boss to complete the article you need to draw up two tables.

Whilst the headings have been written in the suggested order for hand-in, it is recommended that you complete in order of Pass, Merit and then Distinction.
