To achieve this unit you must:
1 Use sources of reference and research skills to provide a range of information
2 Examine major transport routes that link tourist generating and receiving areas
3 Explore the factors that contribute towards a destination’s appeal
4 Investigate the tourism potential of different locations.

Part One:

Scenario:
You are working in the head office of a major travel agency chain and have been asked to carry out a project with the marketing manager. The company have decided to produce a series of leaflets that will help customers with the selection of their holiday destination.

Task One: (P3, M2)
You need to research and produce a leaflet for each of the following destinations; one UK, one European and one Worldwide. Your leaflet must describe the factors that contribute to the appeal of these destinations. (P3)

By comparing and contrasting the appeal of the three destinations you may achieve M2. You may wish to present this as a table. (M2)

You must consider:
Destinations: UK, European, worldwide; towns and cities; coastal/seaside areas; purpose built resorts eg Disney World; natural and rural areas; historical and cultural areas; business
Access: proximity to generating areas, hubs and gateways, cost, transport options available
eg variety, flexibility, ease of use, cost, stop-over points
Culture: lifestyle eg customs values; cuisine, food and drink; traditions; religion; festivals; family practices; cultural differences between visitors and host; cultural events eg Pallio in Sienna, bullfighting in Spain, fiesta in Spain, carnivals in Rio, Notting Hill or New Orleans
Motivation: ‘because it is different’, education, novelty value, history, relaxation, external
 influences eg media
Geographical features: eg topography, oceans, seas, rivers, coastlines, mountains; volcanoes; rainforests; deserts; climate zones; seasonal variations (temperature, rainfall)
Attractions: natural eg Victoria Falls, Grand Canyon, Lake District, Ben Nevis; built
attractions eg Alton Towers, The Louvre, Buckingham Palace, Taj Mahal; events eg sport
(World Cup), exhibitions (Motor Show)

Task Two: (P2)
As these destinations are likely to become more popular within the companies travel agencies, your manager has asked you to investigate and describe the transport routes that are available between the destinations you have researched above and 3 tourist generating areas. You are to present your findings for him in a table that can also be used by staff in the travel agencies as a guide. (P2)

You must consider:
Transport: road, rail, air, water eg sea or inland
Routes: gateways eg airports; ports; stations (Eurostar terminals); hubs, interchange points,
suitability eg cost, time
Time zones: Greenwich Mean Time; Daylight Saving; International Dateline; effects eg jet
lag, crossing International Date Line

Task Three: (M1)
The personnel department are arranging some in-house training for the retail staff and have asked you to put together a handout for staff that will explain how transport routes contribute to the appeal of a destination for different types of visitor. (M2)

Part Two

Scenario:
The marketing manager is pleased with the work that you have carried out for him and has asked you to become involved in another project. In order that the company can successfully sell holidays to less popular holiday destinations you have been asked to carry out some research into destinations that are not yet established tourist destinations but have the potential to become so in the future.

Your information should be presented as a report with 4 sections:

Section One:
Describe the current provision for tourists in two destinations that are not currently established for tourists. (P4) Your manager has suggested that you look at destinations that have recently joined or are applying to join the EU such as Bulgaria, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Poland, Slovenia, Slovakia and Romania. (part P4)

Section Two:
Once you have identified and described the current provision for tourists, you need to identify gaps in the provision for tourists (part P4)

Section Three:
Using the research you have done, explain the tourism potential of the two destinations. (M3)

Section Four:
To complete you report make recommendations of how the two destinations could develop in order to attract an increase in tourists (D2)

You must consider:
Destination: UK, European, worldwide; not yet established as a tourist destination eg a country not yet established as a receiving area for any generating area or a specific destination within an established receiving area that is not yet established for any generating area
Potential: location eg access, topography, climate; accommodation eg hotels, apartments; general facilities eg car parks, toilets, catering; special features eg sport; attractions eg natural, built; market, determinants of demand

PLEASE NOTE: In order to achieve P1, throughout the assignment you need to use a range of resources, reference and research skills, and provide a bibliography to show what resources you have used. By carrying out sustained and independent research using accurate, precise, reliable and sufficient data, and cross checking the reliability of each source, you may achieve D1.
