This assignment has two main tasks.

The overall deadline for the whole assignment to be complete and handed in is:

First hand in: Friday 14th  March 2008
Final hand in: Friday 4th April 2008

The following guidelines should be used when completing your assignment:

  • Your must refer to the criteria banner and the content of the unit throughout the assignment.
  • You should make sure you do detailed research and have a good understanding of the subject you are researching. Keep a note of the resources you use as you go along.
  • Before handing in you must:
    • Check that you have completed all tasks
    • Label work appropriately
    • Present tasks in the correct order
    • That your name appears clearly in the header or footer of each page

 

For further details refer to the ‘Student Guidelines’ that were issued to you at the start of the course.

To achieve this unit you will need to:
Investigate the range of career opportunities in the travel and tourism industry, examine recruitment and selection in travel and tourism, prepare for employment in the travel and tourism industry and explore the factors that contribute to an effective workplace.

Scenario
You work as a personal adviser for the Connexions service and have been asked to produce a booklet on jobs available in the travel and tourism industry. The booklet is to be given out to schools in the Maidstone area as an aid to students due to leave school. As the target audience is school leavers, the jobs you should examine are those that would be appropriate for them to go straight into or progress to within five years.

  

 

 

 

 


Task 1 (part P1)  - deadline = Friday 18th Jan
Your booklet should include at least 8 jobs and should be a mix of opportunities from the three sectors (public, private and voluntary) and various parts of the industry (retail and business travel, tour operations, airlines and airports, visitor attractions, cruising, conference and events, hotels and accommodation, transport and tourist boards).
Include details of further training and development that can be undertaken in order to progress in each job.

Task 2: (part P1) – deadline = Friday 25th Jan
a) You should now choose two jobs from the leaflet that you have prepared and give a more thorough description of each. The descriptions should include entry requirements, opportunities for promotion and progression eg part-time, voluntary, seasonal, work placement, job description and person specification.

b)You should now compare the two jobs chosen in tasks 2a) in terms of entry level and routes for promotion and progression. Then explain your suitability to one of the jobs detailing your training and development needs, as this can be used as an example for the students.
(D1)
c)Critically evaluate your suitability for your chosen job and produce an action plan for training and development needs. Again you can use this to show how students would produce action plans.
Task 3: (P2) – deadline = Friday 1st Feb
To accompany the booklet that you produced for the Connexions service, you have been asked to produce a check list of all the stages in the recruitment and selections process. The check list should describe what each stage involves and should include a flow chart to clearly show the stages. It should be on 2 sides of A4 ready to laminate for use.
You must consider the following:
Identifying company needs, job descriptions and person specifications, advertising, short listing applications, interviewer techniques
Task 4: (P3) – deadline = Friday 8th Feb
In preparation for your yearly appraisal you are to produce a personal skills review
You must consider the following:
Prepare for employment: evaluation of; personal skills, attributes, experience and achievements, identification of development and training needs, action planning

Task 5: (P5) – Friday 14th Mar
As an employee of Connexions service you have now been asked to go into schools and give a short (10 minute) presentation on ‘the factors that contribute to an effective workplace’.

You will need to consider the following:
Working relationships: customers, colleagues, suppliers
Performance management: appraisals, target setting, performance related pay
Teamwork: factors contributing to effective teamwork including management styles, recognising individual strengths and weaknesses (e.g.Belbin, group dynamics, sources of conflict, development (e.g.Tuckmann), effective communication, effective leadership, job roles ad lines of responsibility, motivation e.g self and team; consideration of health, safety and security e.g. self and others
Legal and ethical responsibilities: equal opportunities including race, sex and disability discrimination including Race Relations Act 1976, Sex Discrimination Act 1975, Disability Discrimination Act 1995, Equal Pay Act 1970, contracts of employment, notice periods, disciplinary and grievance procedures, redundancy and dismissal, EU directives regarding maximum hours and minimum pay, maternity and paternity leave, sickness benefits
Training and Development: benefits of training, training methods and activities including induction training, mentoring, in-house and external training, apprenticeships, Investors in People

By extending your presentation to include the following, you may achieve M3,D2

  • Explain how individuals can contribute to making an effective workplace.(M3)
  • Include an analysis of the effects of different working practices and other factors on an effective workplace, highlighting good practice from other travel and tourism organisations.(D2)

*You will need to submit a copy of the PowerPoint presentation along with any notes.

 

Part Two

Scenario:
You have decided to look for a new job within the travel & tourism industry. You have seen an advertisement in the local paper advertising for Travel Sales Consultants to work at Saga Holidays in Folkestone.

  

 

 

 


Task 1: (P4 – in part) – deadline = Friday 15th Feb
Prepare a CV suitable for finding employment within your chosen area of work, in the travel & tourism industry.

Task 2: (P4 – in part) – deadline = Friday 15th Feb
You have found a job that you are interested in at Saga Holidays and have had the application form sent to you.
Complete the application form for Saga Holidays.

Task 3: (P4 – in part)  Thursday 28th Feb
Your written application was successful and you have therefore been asked to take part in a job interview. This will be arranged for a day when the whole group will participate in interviews and interviews will take place in the conference room. You will need to be dressed appropriately (as per input given), be punctual and conduct yourself in a professional manner. During the interviews you must ensure that you promote yourself positively to your potential employers. (You will be provided with a witness testimony to include in your assignment).

Task 4: (M2)
In order to achieve this criterion you need to explain how you have used information from the different stages in the recruitment and selection process to promote yourself positively in the job selection process.

You must consider the following:

Self selling: promoting self via CV and application forms, personal statements, telephone interviews, advanced interview skills eg group interviews, projecting a positive image, personal presentation, body language, company knowledge, giving presentations, test eg psychometric testing, appraising performance

Business Skills: development of written and verbal communication skills, writing business letters, memos, usig fax, email communications, telephone skills, making presentations, time management, prioritising, organising, scheduling, working with others, assertiveness, listening skills

Whilst the above headings have been written in the suggested order for hand-in, it is recommended that you complete tasks in order of Pass, Merit and then Distinction.
