Prepare for Employment

Scenario

You are coming towards the end of compulsory education and need to look at the career options available to you.  Choices that you make now will have an effect on you for a long time – possibly throughout your life.  The better prepared you are, the more likely you are to make good choices.

Task 1: (P1)

Your first task is to look at possible job opportunities and make a note of the skills, knowledge, qualifications and qualities needed for the job. It is suggested that you draw up a table and list these under the four headings.  You should choose between three and five jobs to investigate. The jobs should be realistic for a school leaver.

Once you have done this you should carry out a personal skills audit (a careful look at what skills/knowledge/qualities/qualifications you already have or are working towards).

Finally, in this section, you need to match your skills/qualities /qualifications/knowledge against those identified in the table above.

You must consider the following;

Personal Audit:  knowledge; skills e.g. technical, practical, communication; matching knowledge and skills to job opportunities
Types of employment: e.g. full-time, part-time, permanent, temporary, seasonal, paid, voluntary
Sources of information and advice: sources e.g. advertisements, word of mouth, employment/government agencies; advice e.g. government agencies, careers advisers, tutors, existing and previous employers, careers fairs, friends and family
Applying for jobs: job specifications; person specifications; application forms; curriculum vitae; letters of application)

Task Two: (P2)

You will be given a job application to complete.    You should complete it as per any instructions on the form.

In order to be fully prepared for work you need to understand certain concepts so should carry out research in order to complete the last three tasks.

Task Three: (P3)

For this task you are asked to explain the terms and conditions of employment at Centre Parcs.

To achieve M1 you must explain the importance of terms and conditions of employment.

To achieve D1 analyse, using examples, the implications of the terms and conditions of employment.

You must consider the following;

Terms and conditions of employment: contracts of employment; payment terms; probation; disciplinary procedures; grievance procedures; annual leave; maternity and paternity leave; notice and termination; redundancy; union membership; compliance with company policies/codes of behaviour; representing the organisation; ethical behaviour; contract fulfilment
Legal framework for employment: relevant legislation affecting both the employer and employee e.g.
Disability Discrimination Acts 1995 and 2005
Employment Act 2002
Employment Rights Act 1996
Equal Pay Act 1970
Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
National Minimum Wage Act 1998
Race Relations Act 1976
Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000
Sex Discrimination Act 1975
Working Time Regulations 1998

Task Four: (P4)

For this task you are to describe how working practices are developed.  You can use examples from any organisation but you may find it useful to look in particular at Centre Parcs.

To achieve M2 you must compare the organisation structure of Centre Parcs with another contrasting organisation and the job roles within.

To achieve M3 you must explain the importance of team working and personal attributes within these two organisations.

To achieve D2 you must evaluate how team working and personal attributes contribute to working practices.

You must consider the following;

Organisational structures and job roles: structures e.g. hierarchical, flat, matrix, functional, divisional; interdepartmental linkages; organisational policies on behaviour and conduct; roles within departmental  structures; contribution of individual’s role to achieving business purposes .
Team working: the importance of team working, interdependence of group members; group responsibility
Personal attributes: personal presentation; verbal and written communication skills; following instructions; punctuality and time planning; courtesy; honesty; observing confidentiality

Task Five(P5)

At this point you need to produce a career development plan, for which you need to use a performance review.  Draw up a form that will record the relevant information and complete this bearing in mind the content below.

You must consider the following;

Reviewing performance: e.g. performance at work, school or college; formal performance appraisal; informal reviews from peers and colleagues.
Career development: e.g. induction, training needs, development plans, performance targets, certificated training, un-certificated training, personal development, flexible working, progression opportunities
