Skills Challenge Champions 2010

This years' final round of the Sixth Form Skills Challenge took place on Tuesday 13th July with four groups battling it out for the title.

The Skills Challenge sits in place of work experience and gives teams of up to 12 students the opportunity to work with a company over two-weeks, developing a solution to a ‘real' business project.

Representatives from each organisation were assigned a team at the start of the Skills Challenge and acted as their mentor throughout. All students that took part this year put in a lot of effort and enjoyed their challenges. The students should be extremely proud of their achievements with many of the ideas they suggested already being put in to action by the businesses they worked with.

All teams presented their ideas on Monday 12th July when preliminary judging took place, and four groups made it through to the final, which was held at the Cornwallis Academy Plaza.

The standard of work and quality of presentations was higher than ever and each group did a fantastic job. The judges had an extremely tough decision to make but crowned the MMG Citrus Team this year's winners. The group produced a marketing strategy for selling the company's ‘easy peel' oranges.

The winning team members were:

Chloe Bolton
Jessica Cunningham
Scott Fisher
James Gymer
Catherine Leighton
Mikey Price
Nathan Scott
Jack Treeby
Billy White

Second place went to the Urban Blue Bus team, who came up with a plan to recruit young volunteers. Joint runners-up were RBS and Hadlow College. Winning team members received £100 each, second place £50 and runners-up £30 per person.

Skills For Life Year 10 Programme 2010

The Skills For Life team organised an event filled week for year 10 students this year. The activities were designed to help students think about their skills and to help them develop team building, communication and enterprise qualities. The programme also included information about employment rights for young people, an opportunity to take part in the Morrisby Psychometric test, as well as preparation and briefing for Work Experience.

Enterprise of Olympic Games

On Monday 5 July Year 10 students took part in a series of Enterprise of Olympic Games workshops. Organised by the Skills for Life team and run by facilitators from the British Olympic Foundation, the students looked at different aspects of planning the Olympics.

In groups, students thought about the financial planning and marketing of the games; the power of advertising; communication issues across the nations and; preparing for the games as an athlete.

The aim of the day was to get students to consider the Olympic Games as a business opportunity to generate revenue, as well as a sporting event.

Army puts students through their paces

The Army arrived well equipped to give Year 10 students at Cornwallis Academy an action-packed day on Friday 9 July.

The activities, including bridge building and fitness testing, gave students an insight into the array of careers available within the force as well as providing hands on teambuilding and leadership experience.
The students learnt and practised a number of transferable skills such as problem solving and communication, which they will find useful as they go out into the work place for Work Experience 12 - 16 July.

University of Greenwich

On Thursday 8th July Year 10 students took part in a trip to the University of Greenwich. The visit gave students an insight into the world of further education and a chance to find out about what life might be like at university. As well as a tour of the campus, students were involved in activities and a question and answer session.
