Curriculum

The broad and balanced curriculum at New Line Learning Academy is designed to provide all pupils with a high quality education appropriate to their needs in order to prepare them academically, socially and personally for the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of further or higher education, employment and adult life.

Key Stage 3 (Year 7 – Year 9)

All pupils are taught:

  • National Curriculum Core subjects – English, Mathematics and Science.
  • National Curriculum Foundation subjects – Art, Design and Technology, Food and Cookery, Mandarin, Spanish, Geography, History, Dance, Drama, Music, Physical Education.

Pupils are placed in mixed ability tutor groups. At Key Stage 3, setting occurs in English, Mathematics and Science. All other subject areas are taught within a mixed ability structure.

All pupils in Year 7 take part in one Literacy Lab lesson each week. This lesson is designed to develop and enhance the literacy skills of our learners so they can access their studies more successfully and confidently.

In Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 there is a Grammar Stream for pupils who have been identified as being Upper Prior Attainers. Pupils in the Grammar Stream are taught the majority of their lessons in this group. We also have an Endeavour group for pupils who have found the transition from primary school to secondary difficult.  Pupils in the Endeavour group receive the majority of their lessons from a specialist KS2/3 teacher and remain in this group until they are ready to make the transition to mainstream lessons with the rest of their cohort.

Key Stage 4 (Year 10 – Year 11)

Key Stage 4 is introduced in Year 9, with courses commencing in Year 10. Our Pathways process is based on the interests, abilities and aptitude of pupils. It offers a range of GCSE and Level 2 Vocational qualifications. No pupil is forced to study a non-core subject or down a curriculum route they do not wish to follow. At KS4 all pupils will study/follow:

  • The core subjects of English Language, English Literature, Mathematics and Science to full GCSE level. Level 2 Finance has been introduced into our core curriculum this year as we believe having the required knowledge and skills in dealing with finances during adult life and being money literate is essential for our pupils. These core subject account for 19 of the 30 lessons pupils receive a week
  • Subjects offered in our option structure include Spanish, Mandarin, History, Geography, Business, Health and Social Care, Food and Cookery, PE, Art, DT, Music, Dance and Drama. These subjects account for 9 of the 30 lessons pupils receive per week
  • Core PE for which they will receive 2 lessons a week

At Key Stage 4 mixed ability tutor groups are retained. Setting continues in English, Mathematics and Science. The option groups are generally mixed ability.
