Great New Line Learning Academy British Bake Off House Competition

Pupils at New Line Learning Academy had their baking skills put to the test as they sought to become the ‘Great New Line Learning Academy British Bake Off House Champions’.

Bakers from year 9 & 10 teamed up in their school houses to tackle the ‘Show Stopper Challenge’ brief which challenged bakers to design, make and decorate a cake with an Easter theme. After much whisking, baking and decorating, the panel of judges were ready to view and make their verdict on the beautifully presented results of the pupils’ efforts.

Our panel of judges included current NLL catering manager - Mr Lidster, Mrs Dunning - NLL British Bake Off winner 2015, Mrs Thomas – Lead Practitioner of Food and Cookery, and Mrs Thorpe – Headteacher’s PA of Tiger Primary School.

After much deliberation amongst the judges, they finally came to a verdict; as expected, it was very tight with only two marks separating first and second place. It was year 9 pupils Jessica Stevens and Frozan Faizi who were declared champions this year. They dazzled judges with their ‘Brilliant Benjamin Bunny’, a Victoria Sponge decorated with green sugar paste, chocolate soil, piped grass, with a cute moulded white rabbit peeping out of the cake.

When asked about their victory, Jessica Stevens said: “It feels amazing to win something that I love doing. It’s been a challenge but I am happy to have had the opportunity to take part”. Frozan Faizi said she “felt nervous throughout the competition” and was “pleasantly surprised” to be awarded first prize for her baking skills.

Mrs Thomas, Lead Practitioner for Food & Cookery, said: “The purpose of the event was for students to have fun whilst learning new skills, with the aim of working collaboratively in a team. The excitement, buzz, communication between students, plus the enthusiasm generated towards and during the event has been truly inspirational. It really was a Great House Competition”.

However, the cherry, or in this case, the bunny on the cake came from Charlotte Beck, of the Junior Bake Off Team. Upon viewing the photos sent to her she made the point that: “The Show Stopper bakes look brilliant! So creative! The students should certainly include these bakes in their application. We can’t wait to see more talent from the school”.

Certificates were awarded to all competitors in Year 9: Jessica Stevens, Frozan Faizi, Robert Matthews, Amy Smith, as well as, Year 10: Leah Matthews, Lily-Rose Adams, Rebecca Sewell and Holly Palmer. Our ‘Great New Line Learning Academy British Bake Off House’ Champions for 2019, were each presented with gift vouchers and received a cake stand commissioned by Mrs Thomas.

Furthermore, the following Achievement Points given to each House:

1st Place Yew 500 Points

2nd Place Ash 400 Points

3rd Place Elm 300 Points

4th Place Oak 200 Points

Congratulations to all. Thank you for all those who have helped to support this competition.
