School of Excellence

The School of Excellence is a selective programme designed to enhance pupils’ drama, dance, music and technical theatre abilities. This programme will run alongside timetabled performing arts lessons, and will provide pupils with the opportunity to further develop and master a range of skills, taking their  involvement in the performing arts to the next level. Who can apply?

The programme is open to all pupils who will be selected through an audition process. There are 10 places available in year 7. Please see below the key dates for the 2021 auditions. Please click here to apply.


Beyond the Curriculum

Here at New Line Learning Academy we offer a wide range of enrichment activities for your child to partake in. These include a variety of after school clubs including Art and design, STEM, various sports activities and Young Farmers. All pupils are able to choose a pathway option from year 7 where pupils are given the opportunity to pursue qualifications that are relevant to their interests and ambitions.

Can anyone translate for me?

At NLL we have a dedicated english as an additional language (EAL) specialist. Mrs Ribeiro will be able to help you settle into academy life and will provide support to you and to your teachers so that they are best placed to help you progress

What will happen on transition?

On transition you will be placed into your tutor group.  You will meet key members of staff including your form tutor, your head of year and your support manager. 

you will also meet your new peers in your tutor group and have time to spend getting to know them. 

you will have the chance to take part in some lessons to get an idea of what lessons are like at new line learning. 

Do I take my books home?

in most classes you will be expected to take your exercise books home. this allows you to complete home learning tasks and revise for assessments. 

It also encourages you to become responsible for remembering your timetable and to bring the correct equipment. 

How can I get involved in academy life?

There are many ways you can get involved in academy life. you can become a house captain or vice captain and be a part of the pupil council. 

You could become part of an academy team such as netball, football or badminton. 

You could apply to be part of the performing arts school of excellence or take part in a dance or music show. you could even land the starring role in the annual pantomine or academy production. 

What is my 360?

The 360 gives you everything you need to know about life at NLL such as:

Home School agreement, School day, Term times, Marking Policy, Home Learning and House and Conduct points

The middle of the 360 is a diary, offering you space to record your home-learning, your house and conduct points and any messages between home and your teachers.

The final third offers teaching and learning tools. Your teacher will ask you questions and you can RAG rate your knowledge with a RED, AMBER and GREEN page. You have a true or false page, a whiteboard and department specific vocabulary.

What should I expect in lessons?

Every lesson at New Line Learning is different. You might be in a classroom, in a specialist space or even outside.

In our classroom’s you will be taught using technology.  You might be asked to share your work, here you will be given a visualiser which connects your work to the big screen. In classrooms you will have an exercise book (which you will take home) and be seated in a seating plan. Your teacher will engage your interest with amazing topics and discussions. You will explore the information, learning new knowledge and building on what you already know. You will complete creative tasks, take part in exciting discussions and present your work in a variety of ways.

We also have designated areas for specialist subjects and include specialist equipment. You will test the theory in practical sessions, these include:

Music Room with 18 brand new Macs, Dance Studio with ballet bar and mirrors, Sports Hall (the largest in Kent), Science Laboratories, Catering area, a fully functioning farm, Lecture Theatre, Design Technology.

Our outside space includes an amphitheatre, football and rugby pitches, Multi usage games areas and communal areas.

What equipment do I need?

in order to faciitate your learning and ensure you’re ready to make progress every lesson you will need to bring the following equipment to the academy:

2 black pens

2 green pens

2 hb pencils

Clear ruler

Rubber

Sharpener

Scientific calculator

Will I get home work?

Home Learning is set: 

1. To encourage and support students to develop the confidence and self-discipline to work and learn independently 

2. To strengthen the liaison between home and school through the use of the 360. Checking and signing homework.

3. To develop skills of self-study and research 

4. To extend learning 

There are different types of Home Learning students can receive:

Microsoft Teams: assignments will be set on Microsoft Teams. Pupils can access Microsoft Teams using their NLL login credentials. Here staff can mark and monitor progress for pupils.  

GCSE POD: NLL has purchased a supporting revision and extension package. Pupils can log in to GCSE POD using their usual login credentials. Here pupils can find extension activities, videos to support learning, quizzes, past papers and much more. 

Projects: MT may not be suitable for all subjects. For subjects that require a different approach, projects will be set via the 360. 

Home Learning Pack: Pupils may be provided a Home Learning pack which will cover a period of time, i.e a topic, a term or the academic year. Pupils will be responsible for looking after the pack, completing the home learning and bringing it to their teacher to have it marked. 

How will I be kept informed on my Childs progress?

On transition your child will sit cognitive ability tests (CATs). these tests are an assessment of developed abilities in areas known to make a difference to learning and achievement – namely verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning – and it provides an objective perspective on potential pupil achievement.

These results are used by the academy to ensure the appropriate level of support and challenge for your child

How can I pay for my Childs school meals?

at new line learning academy we run a ‘cashless catering’ system. this means that we do not accept cash to pay for meals or drinks. insted your child will be issued with a card that is swiped to pay for thier meals. 

you will be able to top your childs card up using an online parent pay system. you can even set a maximum amount that can be spent each day.

watch out for our special events where we have surpises on the menu. pupils have experienced a range of exotic food from churros to crocodile!

On transition you will be given a paper copy to apply for  free school meals.

How can I get involved in academy life as a parent?

you can get involved in academy life by attending our parents evenings, joining our parent, teacher, student association (ptsa) or joing us for our parent forum. this will allo you to have a say in how the academy operates
