Preparation for Exams

At New Line Learning Academy, we are committed to helping every student achieve their full potential in their Key Stage 4 qualifications. Exam preparation is an ongoing process throughout Years 10 and 11, ensuring students develop the knowledge, skills and confidence needed to succeed in their GCSE, BTEC and NCFE courses.

Our aim is to ensure that students feel supported, prepared and ready to perform at their best when examinations arrive.

High-Quality Teaching and Learning

Excellent teaching is the foundation of exam success. Our curriculum is carefully planned to build students' knowledge and understanding over time, while regularly revisiting key concepts to strengthen long-term retention.

Teachers provide clear guidance on examination requirements and help students develop the skills needed to apply their learning effectively in assessments and examinations.

Regular Assessment and Feedback

Throughout Key Stage 4, students complete a range of assessments that help teachers monitor progress and identify areas for improvement. These may include:

  • Topic tests and end-of-unit assessments
  • Mock examinations
  • Coursework and controlled assessments
  • Retrieval practice and knowledge checks

Students receive regular feedback to help them understand their strengths and the next steps needed to improve their performance.

Mock Examinations

Mock examinations play an important role in preparing students for their final exams. They provide valuable experience of working under exam conditions and help students become familiar with examination procedures and expectations.

Mock exams allow students to:

  • Practise examination techniques
  • Build confidence and resilience
  • Identify areas for improvement
  • Experience formal exam conditions
  • Receive targeted feedback before final examinations

Following each mock examination period, teachers support students in reflecting on their performance and developing effective revision strategies.

Revision Support

As examinations approach, students have access to a range of support and revision opportunities, including:

  • Revision lessons and intervention sessions
  • Subject-specific revision materials
  • Online learning platforms
  • Revision guides and knowledge organisers
  • Additional support sessions before or after school where appropriate

Students are encouraged to develop independent study habits and use a variety of revision techniques to support their learning.

Supporting Student Wellbeing

We recognise that preparing for examinations can be both exciting and challenging. Alongside academic support, we place great importance on student wellbeing.

Students are encouraged to seek support from teachers, tutors and pastoral staff whenever needed. By working together with families, we help students develop the confidence, organisation and resilience required for success.

Working in Partnership with Parents and Carers

Parents and carers play an important role in supporting students throughout their exam journey. We keep families informed through progress reports, consultation evenings and regular communication from subject departments.

By working together, we can help every student achieve their very best.
